What Movies Were Filmed On The Amalfi Coast?
One terrace in Ravello has appeared in a 1953 Humphrey Bogart caper, a superhero origin story and a Christopher Nolan thriller. A village of 764 people has played the setting of a Denzel Washington film and a Netflix series in the same decade. The Amalfi Coast has been a working film location for seventy years, and the list of what was genuinely shot here is shorter and more interesting than the internet suggests.
Use the filming record to build a route through public places; book transport for the towns and arrange any villa admission separately. The featured Sorrento three-town outing includes a boat transfer in April–October. Choose Your Experience Below.

Filming-location lists have a fabrication problem. A film set on the Amalfi Coast was often shot somewhere else entirely, and a film nobody associates with the coast turns out to have spent weeks here. What follows sticks to titles with a documented location record, names the villa, terrace or piazza where possible, and says plainly where a famous title does not belong.
Ravello and Atrani make the strongest film-location pair. Positano adds the beach scenes; Capri belongs to a separate island day. A coastal tour is transport and sightseeing, not guaranteed access to a film set. What Movie Was Filmed In Positano, Italy?
The two best-documented are Only You (1994), the Norman Jewison romantic comedy with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr., which shot in Venice, Positano and Rome, and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), whose beach scenes and closing wedding sequence were filmed in Positano rather than in Tuscany.

Only You uses the town as its final destination, and Positano does a lot of the emotional work: the pastel tiers, the harbour, the church dome. It is the film most people mean when they ask this question, and its location record is clean.
Under the Tuscan Sun is the more surprising answer, and a piece of geographic misdirection. Its only beach is Positano's, reached after a drive from Rome and revisited near the end. Tuscany gets the farmhouse. The Amalfi Coast gets the wedding.
What Was Filmed In Ravello?
Ravello, and specifically Villa Cimbrone's Terrace of Infinity, has one of the densest filming records in southern Italy. Beat the Devil (1953), Wonder Woman (2017) and Tenet (2020) all used the same belvedere. A Good Woman (2004) shot across Ravello, Amalfi, Atrani and Sorrento. Tenet also used the terrace of the Belmond Hotel Caruso.

Beat the Devil came first. John Huston directed, Truman Capote wrote the script on site while shooting was under way, and the cast, Humphrey Bogart, Gina Lollobrigida, Jennifer Jones, Robert Morley and Peter Lorre, stayed at the Hotel Palumbo. Bogart's villa is Villa Cimbrone, the marble-busted terrace he walks Jennifer Jones along is the Terrace of Infinity, and the shady characters loiter in Piazza Duomo.
Sixty-four years later the same terrace became Themyscira, where Queen Hippolyta tells Diana about the godkiller sword. This is where fact-checking earns its keep: Themyscira's beaches were shot at Palinuro on the Cilento coast, well south of Salerno, not here. Tenet then used the belvedere for the Protagonist's meeting with Kat and the Hotel Caruso terrace for his dinner with Sator, per the film's location record, plus the beach at Maiori. The catamaran race that reads as its most Amalfi sequence was not shot in Italy at all: the boats were handled by the UK SailGP team off the south coast of England.
A Good Woman, the 2004 adaptation of Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan, is set in Amalfi in 1930 and was shot at Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Sorrento and Rome. It is the most literal film on this list, in that the coast plays itself.

Which Films Used Atrani, The Smallest Town In Italy?
Two big ones within a decade. The Equalizer 3 (2023) turned Atrani into the fictional village where Denzel Washington's character settles, filming around Piazza Umberto I, and Netflix's Ripley (2024) used Atrani as Mongibello, the seaside town where Dickie Greenleaf is living when Tom Ripley arrives.

Atrani is 12 hectares, the smallest comune in Italy by area, with a population of 764 as of 2025. That scale is why crews want it: piazza, arcade, church steps and beach sit within a few dozen metres of each other, with no modern frontage to hide. The Equalizer 3 also worked the wider coast, with a night motorbike chase along the Maiori seafront and an action sequence on the SS163 near Punta del Vento.
Ripley spread further still. Atrani carries the Mongibello scenes, Dickie's villa is Villa Torricella on Capri, and the series also shot in Rome, Venice, Naples and Palermo. Positano is named in the story but was largely staged elsewhere, a reminder that a place in the dialogue is not a place on the call sheet.

Was The Talented Mr. Ripley Filmed On The Amalfi Coast?
No, and this is the most common error in Amalfi Coast film lists. The 1999 film's fictional Mongibello was built from Ischia and Procida, two islands in the Bay of Naples, with further shooting in Rome, Venice, Naples, Anzio and Palermo. The coastline everyone remembers as Amalfi is not Amalfi.

The confusion is fair, because the Netflix series that followed twenty-five years later genuinely did shoot in Atrani. The practical difference: plan a trip around the 1999 film and you want a boat to Procida; plan it around the 2024 series and you want Atrani and Capri, both on the doorstep here.

Has Anyone Outside Hollywood Filmed Here?
Yes. The commercially biggest is Amalfi: Rewards of the Goddess (2009), directed by Hiroshi Nishitani, the first Japanese film shot entirely in Italy. It was made in Rome, Caserta and on the Amalfi Coast, finished as the ninth highest-grossing release in Japan that year, and remains a reference point for Japanese visitors to Amalfi.

Where Can You Actually Stand In These Locations?
Most of them are public or open to visitors. Villa Cimbrone's gardens and the Terrace of Infinity are open in Ravello, Piazza Duomo in Ravello and Piazza Umberto I in Atrani are simply village squares, and Positano's beach is a beach. The private ones, Villa Torricella on Capri and the hotel terraces, are look-from-outside propositions.

Treat Ravello and Atrani as one trip. Atrani is a short walk from Amalfi through a tunnel most day-trippers never notice, and Ravello sits directly above on the hillside. A day taking in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello covers three of the towns in the table, and the road between them is the location for the SS163 sequences in The Equalizer 3. Frequently Asked Questions
What movie was filmed in Positano, Italy?
Only You (1994), with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr., shot in Venice, Positano and Rome, and it is the title most people mean. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) also filmed its beach scenes and its closing wedding sequence in Positano despite the name. Netflix's Ripley names Positano in the story but staged most of those scenes elsewhere.
What movies were filmed in Ravello?
Beat the Devil (1953) used Villa Cimbrone, its Terrace of Infinity and Piazza Duomo. Wonder Woman (2017) used the same terrace for Queen Hippolyta's scene. Tenet (2020) used the terrace again plus the terrace of the Belmond Hotel Caruso. A Good Woman (2004) filmed across Ravello along with Amalfi, Atrani and Sorrento.
Was Tenet filmed on the Amalfi Coast?
Partly. The Villa Cimbrone Infinity Terrace and the Hotel Caruso terrace in Ravello are real Amalfi Coast locations, and the production also shot around Amalfi by yacht and at Maiori beach. The catamaran race, which reads as the film's most Amalfi scene, was not shot in Italy: the boats were handled by the UK SailGP team off the south coast of England.
Was The Talented Mr. Ripley filmed on the Amalfi Coast?
No. The 1999 film's fictional town of Mongibello was assembled from Ischia and Procida in the Bay of Naples, with additional shooting in Rome, Venice, Naples, Anzio and Palermo. The 2024 Netflix series Ripley is the one that filmed on the Amalfi Coast, using Atrani for Mongibello and Villa Torricella on Capri for Dickie's villa.
